The Appalachian Center for the Arts will be housing a new exhibit, Stories Told, Secrets Revealed: The Quilts of Bet Ison, Thursday, April 21st through June 26th, 2022. Located in the gallery of the venue, this exhibit contains 10 quilts made by the self-taught quilt maker, Bet Ison, and 20 adjunct pieces which tell and illustrate the stories and secrets stitched into the quilts. This exhibition was originally designed for and exhibited at the Rowan County Art Center (Morehead, Kentucky) in September 2019.
Living in rural Rowan County, Kentucky, Bet Ison is surrounded by scraps of material, of objects, of stories. It is from these scraps, these “left behinds”, that she creates her quilts. Curiosity drives her to create new materials out of old and to tell old stories in new ways. She makes quilts to illustrate her thoughts, to experiment, to learn, and to tell the stories of her life and the people around her.
