The clan’s lineage began with Robert Fleming\, a loyal supporter of Robert Bruce during a turbulent period in Scotland’s history. Fleming is remembered in legend for his role in the dramatic confrontation between Bruce and John Comyn in 1306—an event that shifted the course of Scotland’s fight for independence. \nWhen Bruce was crowned King Robert I shortly thereafter\, he rewarded Fleming with the baronies of Cumbernauld and Lenzie. For nearly 450 years\, Cumbernauld stood as the principal seat of the Fleming family\, and the motto “Let the deed shaw” became a lasting emblem of the clan’s legacy.
