Doc’s unwavering commitment to promoting Pikeville as a tourist destination led to significant developments within the local tourism industry. As a board member and chair of the Pikeville-Pike County Tourism Commission, he worked tirelessly to highlight the region’s unique attractions and create opportunities for economic growth.

Under Doc’s visionary leadership, Pikeville flourished as a cultural and recreational hub, enticing travelers to explore the breathtaking Appalachian landscapes that surrounded the town. Through innovative marketing campaigns, collaborative partnerships, and community engagement, he along with his contemporaries and staff brought new life to Pikeville’s tourism scene. Doc made it a point to work with neighboring cities and counties to promote all of Eastern Kentucky. He supported Governor Patton’s initiative to designate US 23 as The Country Music Highway, a designation that highlights not only the superstars of country music, but region’s up-and-coming artists. He was also responsible for establishing 10 historical markers within the history-rich region.

One of Doc’s remarkable achievements was the establishment of the “Hatfield and McCoy Historic Feud Driving Tour.” This initiative capitalized on the area’s rich historical significance as the site of one of the most infamous family feuds in American history. Doc collaborated with the descendants of the McCoy family and other contributors on the peace treaty and the creation of monuments in the county. He emphasized the importance of applying for grants to establish historic markers and to make our sites more accessible. Under his leadership, steps were constructed at the McCoy “Baby’s grave” site, as well Dils Cemetery, ensuring accessibility for families and tourists visiting the burial sites.

Alongside Phyllis Hunt, the then Executive Director of Pikeville-Pike County Tourism, Doc tirelessly laid the foundation for Pikeville, Elkhorn City, Coal Run Village, and Pike County as thriving tourism destinations. Despite not being on the tourism commission in recent years, Walter (Doc) Fletcher’s impact remained invaluable.

Since retiring from the tourism board, Doc would often visit our information center to receive updates and offer assistance if needed. Before departing, he would motivate us to continue our diligent efforts and commend the progress we were making. He served as an exceptional and inspiring mentor to all who knew him.

Walter “Doc” Fletcher’s dedication to Pikeville’s tourism industry will forever be remembered and celebrated. His unwavering commitment to showcasing the region’s natural beauty, preserving its rich history, and promoting community engagement transformed Pikeville into a thriving tourist destination. As we bid farewell to this remarkable individual, let us carry forward his vision of hospitality, unity, and the pursuit of excellence. Pike County will forever owe a debt of gratitude to the man who dedicated his life to making it an amazing place to visit and live.
