Pikeville’s craft beverage scene is entering an exciting new chapter. Brothers Wright Distilling Co., a family-owned and Eastern Kentucky-rooted company, has officially acquired the Dueling Barrels Brewery & Distillery in downtown Pikeville. This transition brings local ownership to one of the region’s most iconic tourism destinations and promises big things ahead for visitors and locals alike.
A Bold New Chapter for a Pikeville Landmark
The Dueling Barrels facility, located on 2nd Street in the heart of downtown Pikeville, has long been a major draw for travelers along Kentucky’s famous Bourbon Trail. Spanning more than 30,000 square feet, this destination included a brewery, distillery, restaurant (Pearse’s Place), and an immersive welcome center. Now, under the leadership of Brothers Wright, this space is poised for new energy, expanded offerings, and deeper community roots.
Shannon and Kendall Wright, co-founders of Brothers Wright Distilling, are no strangers to the distilling world. Their flagship bourbon is aged in a unique underground coal mine on a reclaimed Pike County property—an innovative method that honors the coal heritage of the region while producing world-class spirits.
What’s Coming Next?
With the acquisition, Brothers Wright will move their primary spirits production to the Pikeville facility, centralizing their operations. Visitors can expect the following enhancements:
- Expanded distilling capabilities, including a new 14-inch Vendome column still.
- Relocation of Pearse’s Place restaurant from the upstairs to the more accessible ground floor, creating a stronger connection with the revitalized 2nd Street area.
- Live music and community events hosted on a small indoor stage.
- A revamped upstairs space available for private events, meetings, and gatherings.
- Job creation and tourism development, helping boost the local economy.
At the same time, the Aflex location of Brothers Wright continues to grow. Plans there include a barrel filling and packaging line, a restaurant and live music venue, and an on-site coal mining museum. Visitors will also be able to take tours of the mine where bourbon is aged in a cool, natural environment that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
Honoring a Legacy, Building the Future
Originally created by Dr. Pearse Lyons and Deirdre Lyons of Alltech fame, Dueling Barrels was the first combined beer, bourbon, and moonshine operation in Eastern Kentucky. The facility was envisioned as a tribute to Appalachian culture and its parallels with Irish heritage.
Now, with Brothers Wright Distilling at the helm, that spirit of innovation and community focus continues—rooted more deeply than ever in the local culture and economy.
