As crisp autumn air moves across the Appalachian Mountains, Southeast Kentucky is fixin’ to burst into color. Soon, hillsides will glow with reds, golds, and amber tones, reflecting across quiet lakes and framing our winding country roads. This photo blog features the work of Mary Reed Runyon, a native of Hatfield in Pike County, Kentucky, who has captured the beauty of fall seasons past across our ridges, hollers, and waterways.

A Season of Scenic Wonder

Autumn in Pike County is a sightseer’s dream. Country lanes turn into leaf-tunneled corridors, morning mist lifts from the valleys, and every bend reveals a postcard view. Whether you cruise the US 23 Country Music Highway, circle Fishtrap Lake, wander the Breaks of the Mountains at Breaks Interstate Park, or climb up toward Pine Mountain, fall color surrounds you.

Through the Eyes of a Local Photographer

Born and raised in Hatfield, Mary brings a local’s perspective to the landscape. Her images highlight small moments, sunlit leaves, dew on the forest floor, and wide panoramas from ridge to ridge. The collection below blends intimate details with sweeping views to tell the story of fall in the mountains we call home.

Plan Your Autumn Visit
