The story of the Hatfields and McCoys is one of America’s most legendary family feuds, but the historic sites connected to that story do not preserve themselves. Thanks to the efforts of Pikeville-Pike County Tourism CVB and dedicated local volunteers, several important feud-related locations and cemeteries are receiving the care and attention they deserve.

Recent cleanup efforts have focused on helping these historic places look their best for visitors, descendants, history lovers, and tour groups traveling through Pike County. Volunteers have worked to clear weeds, trim overgrowth, refresh decorative areas, and make these meaningful sites more welcoming while respecting their historic and sacred character.

Among the locations receiving attention are sites connected to the Hatfield-McCoy Feud Driving Tour, including the McCoy Well site near Hardy, Kentucky, and Dils Cemetery in Pikeville. Both places are deeply connected to the region’s history and continue to draw visitors who want to better understand the people, places, and events behind the famous feud.

Dils Cemetery is the final resting place of several key figures connected to the feud, including Randolph McCoy, his wife Sarah McCoy, and their daughter Roseanna McCoy. The cemetery is also historically significant beyond the feud, with roots dating back to the Civil War era and with many graves representing generations of Pike County history.

The McCoy Well site near Hardy is another powerful stop on the feud tour. The property is associated with the Randolph McCoy homeplace, where one of the most tragic chapters of the feud unfolded. Today, the site helps visitors connect with the history in a personal way, offering a quiet place to reflect on the story of the McCoy family and the lasting legacy of the feud.

Pikeville-Pike County Tourism CVB is thankful for everyone who has volunteered their time, energy, and care to help maintain these important locations. Their work helps ensure that visitors experience the sites with the respect and dignity they deserve.

“These sites are part of our local heritage, and they mean a great deal to many people,” said Pikeville-Pike County Tourism CVB. “We are grateful for the volunteers who step up to help keep these places clean, accessible, and welcoming for the public.”
